World Asthma Day – May 1

World Asthma Day (WAD) takes place each year on the first Tuesday in May. Initiated by the Global Initiative for Asthma in 1998, the National Asthma Council Australia (NAC) embraces WAD and marks the occasion to highlight the need for ongoing care and vigilance in managing asthma.



1. Sit the person upright – be calm and reassuring. Do not leave them alone.

2. Give medication – shake the blue reliever puffer; Use a spacer if you ahve one. Give 4 separate puffs into the spacer. Take 4 breaths from the spacer after each puff.

3. Wait 4 minutes. If there is no improvement repeat step 2.

4. If there is still no improvement call emergency assistance – 000 in Australia.
